Yanmar Launches First Sterndrive Engine for Boats

Yanmar Introduces ZT350: A New Sterndrive with a Hydraulic Clutch

Diesel engine manufacturer Yanmar has entered the sterndrive market with a product it says could change expectations for marine propulsion. The company’s new ZT350 sterndrive pairs with Yanmar’s in-house diesel engines and introduces a hydraulic clutch designed to deliver noticeably smoother shifting than traditional sterndrives.

Hydraulic Clutch Eliminates the ‘Clunk’

What sets the ZT350 apart is its hydraulic clutch, which removes the familiar “clunk” that often accompanies each gear shift on sterndrives that use cone clutches. Cone clutches have been the standard in sterndrive technology since Volvo Penta introduced the Aquamatic in 1959. By adopting a hydraulic system, Yanmar aims to provide shifting that is as smooth as an inboard transmission, improving comfort and control for operators.

“Like an inboard, [the ZT350] very smoothly goes into gear,” says Greg Eck, special projects manager for Yanmar. “This is a revolution in sterndrive technology and will raise the bar for our competition.”

Integrated Engine and Drive Package

Another key selling point is that Yanmar manufactures both the diesel engine and the sterndrive unit. Because the company designs and tests the complete power package, sales and service can be handled through a single point of contact. Eck emphasizes the value of that integrated approach: buyers receive a matched engine-and-drive system backed by Yanmar’s manufacturing and service network.

The ZT350 will be matched with Yanmar’s BY and LP diesel families. The BY series includes two four-cylinder models (150 and 180 horsepower) and two six-cylinder models (220 and 260 horsepower). The LP model offered with the ZT350 is a six-cylinder producing 315 horsepower.

Durability, Warranty and Market Availability

Yanmar reports the ZT350 has completed extensive testing. “Anyone who’s owned a Yanmar knows that the transmissions are as durable as the engine,” Eck says. The company offers a two-year warranty on the ZT350, matching the warranty terms it extends to its other transmissions that the company began building in-house several years ago.

The ZT350 was introduced to the marine market at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in the fall and was also displayed at the Miami International Boat Show in February. The unit became available for sale in January and is offered both for new-boat installations and for repower projects. Yanmar positions the ZT350 competitively against other sterndrive offerings on the market.

Competition and Market Context

In the U.S. marine engine market, Yanmar will be competing with established sterndrive manufacturers such as Volvo Penta and Mercury Marine’s MerCruiser brand. Those firms have long been dominant in the sterndrive segment. Yamaha exited the U.S. sterndrive market in the mid-1990s, leaving a field dominated by a few large players. Yanmar’s entry introduces a new option, particularly for buyers who prioritize diesel power and an integrated engine-and-drive solution.

Who Should Consider the ZT350?

The ZT350 is likely to appeal to owners considering repower projects as well as boatbuilders specifying powertrains for new vessels. Its hydraulic clutch promises reduced gear-shift shock and a smoother driving feel, which can improve comfort for operators and passengers. The factory-matched engine-and-drive package simplifies installation and servicing, an attractive factor for fleet owners and individual boaters alike.
