Heading Offshore: Guide to Working, Taxes, and Living Abroad

Helmsman 46 Pilothouse — Designed for Extended, Offshore Cruising

Helmsman 46 Pilothouse

When owners feel the call to move beyond coastal cruising into longer, more remote passages, they often look for a boat that is both more robust and more comfortable. The Helmsman 46 Pilothouse answers that call: Hull No. 1 is currently on order from owners who previously cruised a Helmsman 38E Pilothouse and wanted a larger, heavier-duty platform capable of extended offshore work and comfortable long-range voyaging.

Development and Styling

Design work on the 46 began before the pandemic and resumed in 2021, with the owners closely involved in refining the layout and systems to suit their cruising agenda. Naval architecture was handled by Ivan Erdevicki, who took cues from Helmsman’s smaller 38- and 43-foot models while introducing sleeker exterior lines. According to Helmsman founder and Managing Director Scott Helker, the exterior styling has generated positive feedback and the model has been engineered to meet CE Class A rating parameters, reflecting its intent for open-ocean capability rather than strictly coastal work.

Hull and Construction

The 46 uses a semi-displacement hull with soft chines, a deep forefoot and broad aft sections to provide form stability. A full keel, stainless-steel skeg and a large rudder add directional stability and protection to the drive train. Construction features a solid fiberglass (FRP) hull laminate using vinylester resins in the outer layers and an internal FRP grid for strength. Decks are cored with PVC foam to reduce weight while maintaining stiffness and durability.

Propulsion, Performance and Range

For Hull No. 1 Helmsman specified a single 500-hp John Deere 6090SFM85 diesel. Helker anticipates a top speed near 16 knots with that installation. Owners may also choose an optional 493-hp Cummins QSB8.3; both engine choices can be supplied in commercial ratings. Fuel consumption estimates put the boat at roughly 6 gallons per hour at 9 knots, which translates to a range of approximately 1,080 nautical miles while preserving a 10 percent fuel reserve. At a more economical 8-knot cruise, Helker projects an extended range of about 1,440 nautical miles. These characteristics make the 46 attractive to cruisers who want meaningful passage-making capability without moving into much larger displacement trawler territory.

Layout and Accommodations

Unlike Helmsman’s smaller models, which are offered in both sedan and pilothouse versions, the 46 will be available only as a pilothouse. The raised helm provides excellent all-around visibility, and the pilothouse layout opens to a full-beam salon. Protected exterior side stairs lead from the main deck up to the flybridge, and side decks continue around the bow to connect the pilothouse doors for safe, protected movement on deck.

The owner’s stateroom is arranged with a queen-size berth, extensive storage and an en suite head with a dedicated shower compartment. Flexibility is built into the second cabin: owners can opt for a VIP-style stateroom, a convertible stateroom/office arrangement, or a dedicated work office — a practical option for those who need to work remotely while cruising.

Production, Delivery and Support

Helmsman boats are produced at a dedicated shipyard in China. Components are sourced by the company’s Seattle headquarters and shipped to the yard for assembly. For U.S. buyers, delivery can be arranged to Seattle or Charleston, South Carolina. Since launching in 2011, Helmsman has grown steadily; the company expects to deliver 18 boats to the U.S. market in the current year, and the first 46 is scheduled to arrive on the U.S. West Coast this fall.
