At last fall’s Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, Sea Ray unveiled two new models in its SDX lineup: the 2025 SDX 270 Outboard and the SDX 250 Outboard. These outboard-powered deck boats are part of Sea Ray’s broad redesign of the SDX series, which covers models from 25 to 30 feet, and introduce a fresh layout and updated features across the range.
“Sea Ray’s next-gen SDX line was introduced in January 2024 with the launch of the SDX 270 Surf and SDX 270 sterndrive models. Throughout this year, we have expanded the series’ offerings to the SDX 250 available in surf, sterndrive and outboard propulsion, and the SDX 270 Outboard. Improvements from the previous SDX design include optimized storage, integrated coolers, oversized bows, convertible seating and customizable option bundles,” said Sea Ray Director of Product Joey Sharpe.
On the show dock the SDX 270 Outboard stood out for its intelligently designed bow and roomy layout. The forward locker is unusually large for a boat with an 8’6” beam, offering generous storage and seating for sizable groups. An integrated forward cooler keeps drinks within easy reach, and forward speakers paired with the Bluetooth-enabled Fusion stereo create a comfortable, social atmosphere. For beaching or shallow-water stops, a four-step boarding ladder is stowed in the gas-assisted bow compartment, keeping the deck uncluttered when not in use.

The cockpit connects to the bow through a wide walkthrough in the curved glass windshield. Aft seating is highly flexible: adjustable layouts allow the space to be reconfigured for conversation, sunning, or active underway time. Under-seat storage includes a second cooler, and the starboard console offers dry storage that can be converted to an optional private head for longer days on the water.
Sea Ray offers the SDX series with either sterndrive or outboard propulsion. According to Sharpe, production remains balanced between the two drivetrains, but the outboard option was deliberately retained in the complete SDX redesign to meet customer demand for versatility and performance.
One advantage of buying from a major builder within a larger marine group is access to integrated, brand-aligned technology. The SDX 270 Outboard ships with a 300-hp Mercury Verado V8 as standard, delivering a comfortable cruising speed around 28 knots and a top speed in the high 30s (36–39 knots). An optional 400-hp Mercury Verado V10—introduced in 2023—can raise the boat’s top end to an estimated 49 knots at wide-open throttle. Both powerplants use Mercury SmartCraft Digital Throttle and Shift (DTS) controls, which provide precise throttle response and smooth shifts across the rpm range, and include GPS-based Active Trim to optimize outboard trim for performance and fuel economy.
Electronics are centered on a Digital Dash featuring a standard 9-inch Simrad NSX multifunction touchscreen. The system integrates Mercury SmartCraft Connect and comes pre-loaded with North American charts. Buyers can opt for a dual-screen configuration that doubles the dashboard displays with two 9-inch monitors for enhanced navigation and system monitoring.

Sea Ray packages many popular upgrades into option bundles to simplify selection. The Essentials Bundle includes protective covers, quick-connect fender clips and SeaDek flooring on the swim step. The Anchor Bundle adds a stainless-steel anchor and windlass. The Comfort Bundle brings stowable teak tables for fore and aft cockpits and a bow filler cushion for lounging. The Entertainment Bundle upgrades audio to the Fusion Premier system with Apollo RA770 and adds inductive charging stations. The Lighting Bundle provides color-changing and white accent lighting, while the Water System Bundle installs bow and transom washdowns—handy for sandbar days or rinsing off before boarding.
Sharpe notes that bundle selection typically reflects how buyers intend to use their boats. Those who enjoy beaching or sandbars often choose the Water System Bundle or add a head package to extend comfortable time on the water. Boaters who plan to spend evenings onboard or raft up with friends may prioritize the Lighting and Entertainment Bundles.
Additional options include an on-board air compressor for inflating tow toys, a watersports tower with an integrated bimini, a manual bow sunshade, wakeboard racks, a ski pylon and seven hull colors, including a vivid Rally Red. These choices allow owners to tailor the craft for watersports, family cruising, or social days at anchor.
With a flexible layout, abundant storage, integrated coolers and a wide range of option packages—including powerful Mercury outboard choices—the 2025 Sea Ray SDX 270 Outboard aims to serve a broad spectrum of recreational boaters who want a versatile, modern deck boat for days on the water.—Louisa Beckett
