Sabre 48 Salon Express: Specs, Features and Performance

Sabre 48 Salon Express: Down East Cruiser with Zeus Pods and Joystick Control

With the Great Recession well behind the marine industry, boat builders are once again bringing new designs to market rather than only updating existing models. The Sabre 48 Salon Express is a strong example: a Down East-style cruiser designed from the keel up and equipped with twin Zeus pod drives and joystick helm control for confident handling in close quarters.

Bentley Collins, Sabre’s vice president of marketing and sales, notes that this is the company’s third model to feature Zeus pods. The pod configuration has enabled Sabre’s designers to expand interior accommodations without compromising the classic lines of the boat. The 48 Salon Express delivers a comfortable two-stateroom layout plus a third utility space that can be configured as crew quarters or a third guest stateroom, giving owners flexibility for cruising or extended stays aboard.

The joystick control is another major selling point. For many owners, joystick-assisted pod propulsion removes the intimidation factor that comes with handling a larger boat. Collins reports that customers who once considered a 48-foot boat beyond their comfort zone now feel entirely in control—so much so that they often demonstrate their docking skills at the marina. That combination of modern maneuverability and traditional styling is a core appeal of this model.

Positioned between Sabre’s 42 Express and its pair of 54-foot models (Salon Express and Flybridge Sedan), the 48 fills a market gap for experienced boaters who want more space and capability without stepping up to the larger 54-foot platform. Collins describes the ideal owner as a seasoned boater—often a couple whose children are grown—who values quality construction, a practical interior, and dependable performance on overnight trips and coastal cruises. As of mid-September in the model year noted, Sabre had sold nine units and delivered five.

Construction on the 48 employs resin infusion and a fiberglass sandwich with either PVC or end-grain balsa core for hull, decks, hardtop and small components. Resin infusion is a contemporary production technique that helps ensure consistent resin-to-fiber ratios, resulting in a structure that is strong, dimensionally stable and relatively lightweight for its class. Sabre’s careful core selection further balances stiffness and insulation while maintaining a durable finish appropriate for live-aboard cruising.

The interior layout emphasizes an open connection between cockpit and saloon: the starboard-side helm opens directly into the living area, and a large window combined with the glass cabin door visually links the cockpit and salon so they feel like a unified space. The galley sits below on the port side with one of the two main staterooms directly opposite. The forward stateroom offers privacy, and two heads—each with a shower—conveniently separate the sleeping areas to enhance comfort aboard.

Performance comes from twin CMD QSC 8.3-liter diesels rated at 550 horsepower each, paired with Zeus 3800 pods. That package delivers a top speed around 34 knots and a comfortable cruise in the mid-20-knot range. With a fuel capacity of 500 gallons and an estimated fuel burn that yields roughly 347 nautical miles of range at a 23-knot cruise, the 48 balances speed and efficiency for coastal passages and quick weekend hops.
