Boston Whaler Conquest: New Model Review & Specs

Boston Whaler 285 Conquest — Redesigned for Improved Visibility and Seaworthiness

The Boston Whaler 285 Conquest is a ground-up redesign of the model it replaces, the 280 Conquest. The new 285 focuses on improved helm visibility, refined lines, and greater flexibility for owners who want a comfortable, capable offshore cruiser. Boston Whaler’s product development team made a number of targeted changes to enhance seaworthiness and onboard comfort while preserving the brand’s reputation for solid construction and safe handling.

Design and Styling

According to Ron Berman, Boston Whaler’s vice president of product development and engineering, the 285 is a new boat from the keel up. The redesign raises the sheer line slightly and lowers the deck profile, producing a more rugged, seaworthy appearance and a drier ride. One notable upgrade is a full windshield bonded to the hardtop, which improves forward visibility from the helm and offers better protection in rough conditions.

Helm Deck Configurations

To suit a range of cruising and fishing preferences, Whaler offers the 285 Conquest in three helm deck configurations: an open model with a full windshield and low-profile side windows; a version with full side windshields and a drop-down aft curtain for shelter and privacy; and a pilothouse-style layout with a full hard enclosure for maximum protection from the elements. These options allow owners to choose the level of enclosure and climate control they need for their typical boating environment.

Seating, Cockpit and Layout

Customer feedback drove several interior changes. Instead of an inboard-facing settee, buyers asked for a comfortable forward-facing companion seat; the 285 delivers this while retaining the ability to convert the seat back into an inboard-facing settee when desired. Immediately aft of the companion seat is an aft-facing seat with a slide-out footrest, adding convenience and relaxation options for passengers. For additional cockpit seating, optional padded benches flip down from recessed areas in the gunwales, keeping the deck uncluttered when benches are stowed.

Below deck, the boat offers practical accommodations for weekend cruising: a V-berth forward, a compact galley for meal preparation, a head, and a midcabin for additional sleeping or storage space. The layout balances fishing functionality with overnight comfort, making the 285 suitable for day trips, overnight excursions, and family outings.
