Popular coupe-style cruisers are designed to do it all

Boat manufacturers have introduced many new model names over the years, and “coupe” has emerged as a distinct and popular category among cruiser buyers. Coupe-style cruisers blend sporty, expressive exterior lines with a fully enclosed deckhouse, giving owners the flexibility to enjoy open-air dayboating and comfortable, all-weather cruising.
These boats share several defining traits: clean, flush decks; oversized electric sunroofs or hardtop hatches; large, well-ventilated windshields; opening side windows; and full-height glass doors aft that close off the deckhouse. When closed and secured, coupes become weather-tight, insulated living spaces—ideal for extended runs or sudden changes in conditions.
“Those doors really make the difference for me,” says Pat Perih, who recently piloted his 2015 Carver C37 coupe from Key West to Marco Island in 4-foot seas with his wife and three children aboard. Perih describes the trip as quiet, dry and stress-free—conditions he says would not have been possible in his previous open-flybridge boat.
Boatbuilders position the coupe as the middle ground between open express cruisers and flybridge designs. Unlike an express model, where the cockpit and foredeck remain largely open to the elements, a coupe provides a fully enclosed environment in the deckhouse while preserving social, deck-level connectivity with the rest of the boat.
For many owners, that convenience means fewer canvas repairs and less Isinglass maintenance. “After years of dealing with vinyl and canvas, the solid doors and integrated glass really simplify ownership,” Perih adds.
Coupe designs focus on dayboating and social space: larger deckhouses, more seating and flexible lounge areas, while galleys and staterooms are often made more compact to free up above-deck living. Modern coupes now routinely include amenities once reserved for belowdecks—air conditioning, full galleys and generous dining areas—while still letting occupants stay connected to the outdoors via expansive glazing and ventilation options.
Designers frequently extend the hardtop aft to shade part of the cockpit, with a retractable awning covering the remaining area. Interiors are arranged to provide versatile seating configurations, and many models offer two staterooms and two heads on larger hulls, while smaller coupes typically provide one stateroom and an additional berth tucked below the bridge deck. Power options range from diesel pods to gas or diesel sterndrives, and performance can be brisk—some larger coupes reach cruise speeds in the mid-20s to 30+ knot range.
Below are highlights of coupe cruisers from Bavaria, Monterey, Carver, Cruisers, Sea Ray and Tiara, covering lengths from about 36 to 47 feet. Their modern styling may not appeal to traditionalists, but these models place equal emphasis on practicality and comfort. As Perih puts it simply: “You close the doors and go.”
Sea Ray 470 Sundancer

The 470 Sundancer reflects a suite of owner-driven updates: a flush deck, larger electric sunroof, expansive windshield and side glazing, plus glass aft doors that fully enclose the deckhouse. A dual-level atrium connects the upper and lower saloons to bring daylight into both spaces, maintaining a strong visual link with the outside even when belowdecks.
This generation features a 50 percent larger aft stateroom with a queen berth and larger hull windows, and a sunroof that is roughly 40 percent bigger than previous iterations. Sea Ray’s “SkyFlow” philosophy increases natural light throughout the living areas, while the deckhouse’s three sliding doors can stack to port for an expansive opening or be arranged for a single center passage. A powered SureShade awning is optional for added cockpit shade.
The 470 includes two full staterooms, private heads, and a full galley. Twin 480-hp Cummins diesels paired to Zeus pods are available, delivering about 0.9 nautical miles per gallon between 23 and 34 knots for an approximate 240-nautical-mile range. V-drive propulsion is also an option.

Cruisers 45 Cantius

The 45 Cantius stands out with a hydraulic swim platform that submerges about 2 feet—useful for swimmers and for launching or retrieving a tender. The cockpit features wraparound seating that converts into a complete sunpad or an aft-facing lounge.
Entry to the deckhouse is raised slightly by a threshold; the helm and companion seats are elevated for improved sightlines. The galley-up layout places the U-shaped galley just aft of the companion seating so the cook remains part of the social space. Belowdecks, the layout dedicates two full staterooms, each with its own head and separate shower. The aft stateroom includes a master and a convertible secondary berth that also functions as seating, while the forward stateroom offers a generous island berth.
Cruisers equips its 40-foot-and-up boats with Volvo Penta IPS drives; the 45 Cantius is available with IPS500 or IPS600 pods. Typical consumption is about 0.85 nmpg at 22–26 knots for an estimated 275-nautical-mile range.
LOA: 45 feet BEAM: 14 feet, 6 inches DRAFT: 3 feet, 5 inches FUEL: 362 gallons POWER: twin Volvo Penta IPS500s (375 hp), IPS600s (435 hp) SPEED: 27 knots top, 23 knots cruise (IPS500); 30 knots top, 26 knots cruise (IPS600) PRICE: $908,520 (IPS500), $955,350 (IPS600) CONTACT: Cruisers Yachts, Oconto, Wisconsin, (920) 834-2211. cruisersyachts.com
Bavaria 360 SC

The Bavaria 360 Sport Coupe is the most compact fully enclosed coupe in this collection. Its three-section folding deckhouse doors, side windows and sliding sunroof convert the boat from a weatherproof cruiser to a spacious dayboat in about a minute.
Despite its modest length, the Bavaria 360 offers two separate staterooms—a forward master and a full-beam aft cabin—alongside a full galley, dinette and a head with a separate shower. High-quality teak joinery and precise woodwork are hallmarks of the interior finishes, giving the boat an upscale feel.
The bridge deck is flush with the cockpit and includes helm seating, a dinette, wet bar with refrigerator and a grill. A sliding fiberglass sunroof opens to create a large overhead aperture. Standard diesel sterndrives power the boat, delivering around 1.3 nmpg at a cruising speed of about 22 knots.

Monterey 360 SC

Monterey designed the 360 SC with family-friendly circulation in mind, prioritizing a single, flush deck so passengers can safely pass between bow and swim platform. The center portion of the windshield retracts into the hardtop, providing direct access forward, and a sliding companionway door with molded, non-skid steps makes the transition smooth and secure.
The coupe’s aerodynamic deckhouse blends glass and fiberglass with clean transitions, and seating at the helm and companion positions can be arranged to face forward or aft. A starboard wet bar and removable cockpit table enhance onboard entertaining. Belowdecks there is a convertible V-berth/dinette, a full galley, an enclosed head with shower and an aft twin berth—ample amenities for weekend stays even though the design favors dayboating.
With twin 380-hp engines, the 360 SC returns roughly 1 mpg at 30 mph, giving an approximate cruising range near 225 miles.

Carver C43
Carver’s C43 is a practical coupe that focuses on comfortable, usable space without unnecessary complexity. The design transitions easily from an enclosed, air-conditioned cruiser to an open dayboat by retracting the electric glass sunroof and opening the large side windows and aft glass doors.
The C43 uses a raised cockpit and deckhouse sole to preserve a flush deck while creating more dry storage below. The galley-up arrangement on the port side offers a two-burner stove, microwave, refrigerator/freezer, icemaker and a dinette for six—putting cooking and socializing at deck level where most owners prefer it.
Belowdecks the forward master includes an island berth and private head with an overhead escape hatch; a guest stateroom with twin berths and a day head sit to port. The boat provides comfortable headroom and practical accommodations for weekend cruising.
Performance figures estimate about 0.84 nmpg at 27 knots for a range near 265 nautical miles using 90 percent of the fuel capacity.
