XO EXPLR 44: XO Boats’ First Aluminum Adventure Yacht
Finnish builder XO Boats, renowned for rugged, high-performance aluminum adventure boats, has introduced its first full-scale yacht: the XO EXPLR 44. Designed for owners who want a capable, seaworthy yacht that can handle long-range exploration and active lifestyles, the EXPLR 44 brings XO’s practical, no-nonsense engineering together with refined Nordic interior styling.

Aluminum Construction and Practical Design
The EXPLR 44 measures 43 feet 6 inches overall (without engines) and has a beam of 12 feet 1 inch. Built in aluminum, the hull and structure benefit from the metal’s combination of strength, light weight and corrosion resistance. Aluminum is a common choice for expedition craft and military vessels because it tolerates harsh conditions, resists fatigue, and can be easier to repair in remote locations than some alternative materials.

Power, Performance and Fuel Capacity
XO offers flexible propulsion choices for the EXPLR 44 to suit different cruising profiles. The boat can be specified with either triple 450-horsepower outboards or twin 600-horsepower outboards, providing strong performance for fast passages. Top speed is expected to exceed 50 knots with appropriate engine selection and load. Fuel capacity is 450 gallons, enabling extended cruising range; actual range will vary according to engines, speed and operating conditions.
Interior Layout and Accommodation
The interior follows a modern, minimal Nordic aesthetic with an emphasis on light, functionality and durable materials. Below decks the EXPLR 44 features two equal-sized cabins. The forward main cabin offers a double berth, a dedicated shower compartment and abundant natural light from deck and hull openings. The innovative aft suite is located under the aft deck and can be fitted in several configurations: as a comfortable lounge-style atrium, as a cabin with twin single berths, or as a double berth with an en suite head. A bunk in the pilothouse provides additional sleeping space, allowing the yacht to accommodate up to six people overnight in practical, well-organized layouts.
Deck Utility and Expedition Features
Deck arrangements are focused on active use and adaptability. Roof rails are engineered to accept racks for bicycles, boards and other sports equipment; they can also be fitted with solar panels to support electrical systems while at anchor. Generous cockpit seating and wet-bar arrangements make the aft deck a social and functional space for watersports staging, dining or simply relaxing between passages.
Design Philosophy
“We believe that we have created something unique again by placing the second suite under the aft deck. No other yacht in this class seems to have an innovation like this!” said Jaakko Kantola, lead designer at XO Boats. The statement highlights the brand’s aim to rethink space usage on a compact yacht while maintaining robust offshore capability.
