Annapolis Cancels Fall Boat Shows Due to COVID-19 Concerns
The City of Annapolis has officially canceled its two major fall boat shows out of concern for public health amid the ongoing coronavirus pandemic. City leaders, including Mayor Gavin Buckley, City Manager David Jarrell, Anne Arundel Health Official Dr. Nilesh Kalyanaraman, and Alderwoman Elly Tierney, made the decision after evaluating the risks and consulting with public health guidance. Annapolis Boat Shows President Paul Jacobs was reportedly not part of the city’s final decision-making process.
The two events affected are the United States Powerboat Show, originally scheduled for October 1–4, and the United States Sailboat Show, originally set for October 8–12. Together, these shows have been an important economic engine for Annapolis. A 2014 economic study estimated that the combined shows generate roughly $112 million annually for the local economy. The United States Sailboat Show, in particular, is known as the world’s largest sailboat show and draws exhibitors, manufacturers, dealers, and boating enthusiasts from across the country and abroad.
City officials considered a range of options before arriving at the cancellation. Organizers had proposed scaled-down events with strict safety protocols: mandatory mask use, temperature screenings, reduced vendor counts, and a daily attendance cap of 6,000 people. Despite these proposed adjustments, the city concluded that safely staging even a smaller version of the shows would be impractical given current public health conditions and the potential for the events to become centers for virus transmission.
“It is a blow to the city and will be additional stress on local businesses, but we can’t be the epicenter of a Covid-19 outbreak. It’s that simple,” said City Manager David Jarrell. That sentiment reflects a cautious stance aimed at protecting residents, visitors, service workers, exhibitors, and volunteers. The decision highlights the difficult balance communities must strike between preserving economic activity and prioritizing public health during a pandemic.
The cancellation is expected to affect a wide range of local stakeholders. Vendors, boat manufacturers, marina operators, local restaurants, hotels, transportation services, and seasonal workers typically rely on the influx of visitors and trade generated by the shows. While the economic impact varies across sectors, the loss of these high-profile events poses immediate and tangible challenges for small businesses and workers that depend on the annual event calendar.
Organizers and city leaders are looking ahead to 2021 with the intention of reinstating both the spring and fall boat shows should public health conditions improve. Planning conversations will likely continue to focus on flexible formats, enhanced sanitation and distancing measures, and contingency plans to respond to evolving public health guidance. For exhibitors and attendees alike, the priority will be clear communication about safety protocols and any changes to schedules if the events are rescheduled or reformatted.
In the meantime, boating enthusiasts and industry followers can explore virtual alternatives. The Soundings Digital Boat Show and other online showcases offer a way to view new models, attend virtual presentations, and discover products from the safety of home. While virtual events cannot fully replace the in-person experience of walking the docks, talking directly with exhibitors, and inspecting vessels up close, they provide a useful channel for product discovery and industry engagement during a period when large gatherings remain risky.
The cancellation of Annapolis’s fall boat shows is an example of how communities that host large-scale events are adapting to the reality of COVID-19. By prioritizing public safety, city officials aim to reduce the risk of a local outbreak while planning responsibly for the future. Residents, vendors, and visitors will be watching developments closely as organizers and public health authorities determine the safest path forward for these signature maritime events.
