Scout 288 Dual Console: Versatile Luxury Fishing and Family Boat

At the Palm Beach International Boat Show last March, the new Scout Boats 670 LXS attracted headlines as the largest outboard-powered model in production. But alongside that splashy debut, Scout quietly advanced its core midrange lineup with the introduction of the 288 Dorado. This new dual-console dayboat brings a thoughtful blend of comfort, fishing capability and coastal-ready performance to a market segment where such versatility is uncommon.

The 288 Dorado is positioned as the flagship of Scout’s dayboat series aimed at coastal use, and it represents a fresh direction for the model line. Measuring 28 feet, 9 inches long with substantial deck volume, the 288 feels roomier than Scout’s 277 and immediately communicates a more open, social layout the moment you step aboard. The extra length and clever packaging create a flexible platform that works equally well for families, anglers and weekend cruisers who want quality construction without stepping up to a large yacht.

One of the boat’s standout features is the oversized hardtop that provides abundant shade and an upscale appearance. Integrated lighting under the hardtop enhances evening use while a stout central handrail gives passengers a secure handhold in rougher conditions. These practical design choices reflect Scout’s attention to detail and elevate the onboard experience after sunset or when heading offshore.

The 288’s cockpit is designed to comfortably accommodate up to eight people while still allowing easy movement for fishing or entertaining. Anglers will appreciate the transom bench with a 13.5-gallon baitwell tucked beneath it, plus a fold-out gunwale bench that stows quickly to free up casting room. Storage is well thought out throughout the boat, making it simple to keep tackle, lines and gear organized and protected whether you’re targeting coastal species or heading out for a family cruise.

Scout redesigned the port-side seating to be highly versatile. Backrests on the seat opposite the helm and the aft seat can be adjusted to create a forward- or aft-facing arrangement. With a fold-out table in place, the pair forms a comfortable dinette perfect for meals and socializing. Once the table is lowered and overlaid with a cushion, the area converts to a large sunpad for lounging between destinations. When underway, the configuration quickly converts back to four forward-facing seats, demonstrating how the Dorado balances social space with practical functionality.

Forward, a U-shaped lounge in the bow offers additional seating and comfort, and owners can choose an optional sunshade for enhanced protection on hot days. A dedicated dry-storage compartment to starboard keeps personal items and safety gear dry and accessible, which is particularly valuable in mixed-use boats that serve both family and fishing needs.

The helm is ergonomically arranged for confident operation. The captain’s seat faces a dash equipped with joystick steering for precise low-speed control, a large Garmin multifunction display, Mercury VesselView engine data and digital switching for systems management. Built-in phone chargers and convenient stowage add to day-to-day practicality. An opening windshield and a lockable wind deflector provide easy bow access while helping keep spray and rain out when the weather turns sour—small touches that experienced boaters will appreciate.

Comfort and convenience features include a console head, a 23-gallon freshwater tank and a compact wet bar in the cockpit with a refrigerator and sink. For owners who like to cook aboard, a grill is available as an option. These amenities make the 288 equally capable as a family dayboat or a serious sport-fishing platform for nearshore trips.

Power comes from twin 300-hp Mercury V-8 outboards as standard equipment. Scout reports a top speed of 49.6 knots at wide-open throttle while consuming 44 gph, with the most efficient cruise observed at 26 knots and 3,500 rpm using 17.1 gph. The hull’s 21-degree deadrise at the transom contributes to a composed, comfortable ride in a variety of sea states, supporting both confident handling and passenger comfort on coastal runs.

Built at Scout’s Summerville, South Carolina facility, the 288 Dorado reflects the brand’s reputation for solid construction and fit-and-finish—from the gelcoat to the heavy-duty hinges and hardware. Priced starting near $388,000, the Dorado offers a high level of standard equipment and thoughtful options, delivering strong value in the dual-console category. Rather than merely filling a niche, the 288 raises expectations for what a mid-sized, outboard-powered dual-console can deliver in terms of comfort, utility and coastal capability.
