Zodiac and Torqeedo Launch eOpen Electric RIB Range at Cannes
Zodiac and Torqeedo have announced a collaboration to produce the new eOpen range of electric rigid inflatable boats (RIBs), set to be unveiled at the Cannes Yachting Festival later this week. The partnership brings together Zodiac’s long experience as a leading RIB manufacturer and Torqeedo’s expertise in electric propulsion systems, delivering compact, user-friendly electric boats for leisure use.
Two Compact Models Designed for Everyday Use
The eOpen series debuts with two models sized for practical coastal and harbor use: the 10-foot 3.1 and the 11-foot 6-inch 3.4. Both models are supplied with a complete Torqeedo drive system, which includes the electric motor, onboard batteries and the charger. This integrated approach simplifies ownership, reduces installation complexity and ensures that components are matched for reliable operation.
According to Zodiac, the new electric boats can run for around 50 minutes at a cruising speed of 12 knots, offering a useful window for short trips, tenders, or day use around marinas and coastal areas. These compact RIBs are aimed at customers who value low maintenance, quiet operation and reduced environmental impact without sacrificing responsive handling.
Features and Options
Both the 3.1 and 3.4 models are offered with several practical options to enhance comfort and versatility. The 3.1 is configured with four seats while the larger 3.4 seats six. Optional upgrades include an EVA (Ethylene-Vinyl Acetate) floor for improved grip and comfort, a bimini top for sun protection, a stern ladder to simplify water access, and a storage net to keep gear secure. Zodiac is also offering a lift kit and a Fusion audio system as additional choices for owners who want more convenience or on-board entertainment.
These options allow buyers to tailor the boats to different uses—whether as a quiet, eco-friendly tender for a larger yacht, a family day-boat for short outings, or a coastal commuter for marinas where silent, non-polluting operation is increasingly preferred.
Proven Electric Technology and Legacy Models
Zodiac already has experience with electric propulsion through its eJet 450, a model developed as a dedicated tender for larger yachts in collaboration with Torqeedo. The eJet 450 uses a hydrojet propulsion system driven by a Torqeedo Deep Blue 50 kW motor paired with an 80i 50 kWh battery, demonstrating the brands’ ability to integrate high-performance electric systems into the company’s product line. The new eOpen models apply the same collaborative approach to smaller-scale boats, focusing on accessibility and ease of use.
Industry Context and Customer Appeal
Electric mobility is expanding rapidly across the marine industry, driven by demand for cleaner, quieter alternatives to traditional internal-combustion outboards. The eOpen line is positioned to meet those expectations by offering a turnkey electric solution that eliminates the need for traditional engine maintenance and reduces noise and local emissions. As Fanny Revert-Ciavattini, Zodiac product marketing manager, explained: “These two 100 percent electric models meet the new needs of customers: no maintenance, no noise, no servicing, less pollution, simple and responsive driving, and an affordable price. Electric mobility is gaining ground all around us, and as the market leader in RIBs, we couldn’t afford to miss out!”
Dr. Michael Rummel, managing director of Torqeedo, underlined the strategic fit of the collaboration: “We were thrilled to partner with Zodiac on their eOPEN line of electric RIBs. It’s an iconic, yet an innovative company that has a finger on the pulse of what customers want, and when.” Their combined strengths aim to make electric boating accessible to more users while maintaining the performance and ruggedness expected from Zodiac RIBs.
What to Expect at Cannes
Visitors to the Cannes Yachting Festival can expect to see the eOpen models presented as complete units with Torqeedo propulsion and the available accessory packages. The launch represents a move toward wider adoption of electrified small craft and highlights the practical benefits of electric RIBs for short-range, day-use scenarios. For buyers and enthusiasts interested in quiet, low-maintenance boating, the eOpen series offers a clear example of where mainstream RIB design is heading.
