Mystic Seaport Opens 33rd International Marine Art Exhibition and Sale
The Maritime Gallery at Mystic Seaport opens its 33rd annual International Marine Art Exhibition and Sale on Sunday. The exhibition brings together more than 100 award-winning marine artists from around the world, showcasing the depth and variety of maritime art in both historical and contemporary forms.

Visitors will find an extensive selection of original works that celebrate America’s maritime heritage and the broader human relationship with the sea. The show features finely detailed paintings and drawings, evocative contemporary canvases, three-dimensional sculpture, intricate scrimshaw, and carefully crafted ship models. Each piece reflects different aspects of maritime life—exploration, commerce, labor, leisure, and the natural rhythms of coastal environments.
The exhibition blends historically researched scenes with modern interpretations. Some artists intentionally recreate documentary-style depictions of well-known vessels, shipbuilding techniques, or port life, while others explore mood, atmosphere, and the changing climate of coastal communities through abstraction and contemporary image-making. Together, these works provide a multifaceted portrait of seafaring culture that appeals to collectors, historians, and anyone who appreciates fine art inspired by the sea.
Maritime Gallery director Jeanne Potter emphasized the museum’s commitment to quality. “Every year we strive to find the best work in the marine field and bring it to our Gallery at Mystic Seaport,” she said. “The show is a wonderful opportunity to view — and purchase — the latest and finest efforts from the most accomplished marine artists working today.” Potter’s statement reflects the curatorial focus on both artistic excellence and the gallery’s role as a marketplace where visitors can acquire thoughtfully selected maritime works.
Participating artists include a diverse range of talent such as Donald Demers, William Duffy, Ian Hansen, Russ Kramer, Sergio Roffo, and Jeff Weaver, among many others. The roster brings together established masters of the marine genre alongside rising artists whose innovative approaches are expanding how people think about seascapes, boats, and coastal life.
All works in the exhibition are available for public viewing and purchase daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Attendees can expect to see a broad price range, from smaller works and studies that offer accessible entry points for new collectors to larger, museum-quality pieces suited for seasoned buyers and institutions. The gallery environment allows for close inspection of technique and materials, and knowledgeable staff are typically on hand to discuss provenance, framing, and shipping options for purchased works.
The show also serves as a seasonal cultural highlight for Mystic Seaport, drawing art lovers, maritime historians, and tourists to the museum. Whether you are seeking an historically accurate depiction of a famous ship, a lyrical painting of the coastline, or a finely carved ship model or scrimshaw piece, the exhibition offers something for a wide range of tastes and interests.
For those planning a visit, the exhibition remains on view through Dec. 31. This extended run gives visitors ample opportunity to experience the breadth of this year’s selection and to make considered purchases. The Maritime Gallery’s annual exhibition continues to be an important platform for marine artists and a meaningful way for the public to engage with the visual storytelling of the sea.
