Albemarle Boats and Spencer Sportfish Announce Partnership for New 53-Foot Offshore Hull
Just before the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show (FLIBS) opened, Albemarle Boats and Spencer Sportfish publicly announced a strategic partnership to develop a new 53-foot offshore sportfishing hull. The collaboration combines Albemarle’s manufacturing capacity and reputation for quality with Spencer Sportfish’s Carolina-style, semi-custom design expertise.
Albemarle Boats, which has produced more than 3,800 hulls since its founding in 1978, is known for building reliable offshore sportfishing boats ranging from 25 to 41 feet. The company’s general manager, Burch Perry, says the move to a larger model has been driven by consistent customer requests for more space and capability. Over time, Albemarle identified the need for a larger platform and searched for the right partner to bring that vision to market.
Spencer Sportfish brings a complementary skill set to the partnership. A semi-custom Carolina-style builder, Spencer has produced over 120 boats and developed a strong reputation among tournament anglers and offshore fishermen worldwide. Paul Spencer, President of Spencer Sportfish, explained that the partnership offers a way to make Spencer’s distinctive styling and performance more broadly available without losing the brand’s custom feel.
“We have always dreamed of a way to provide the Spencer experience to our clients through a more readily available market,” Spencer said at the announcement. “Teaming up with Albemarle allows us to combine classic Spencer styling with Albemarle’s quality and manufacturing innovations.”
At a special event during FLIBS, the partners unveiled a drawing of the new 53-foot hull. While detailed specifications and final options were not released at the reveal, the drawing showcased the lines and profile that reflect Spencer’s Carolina influence paired with Albemarle’s proven offshore hull architecture. The hull mold is currently under construction at Albemarle’s facility in Edenton, North Carolina, and the companies expect to begin construction of the first hull in early 2021.
The collaboration aims to address demand among anglers who want a larger, tournament-capable platform that can also serve as a comfortable cruiser for long-range offshore trips. By leveraging Albemarle’s production experience and Spencer’s performance-oriented design, the new model seeks to offer both durability and the semi-custom touches that buyers of high-end sportfishing boats expect.
Beyond the hull itself, the partnership suggests opportunities for shared development in outfitting, systems integration, and optional configurations. Buyers can likely expect features and layouts tailored for serious anglers—fishability, rod storage, tackle organization and deck ergonomics—while also offering creature comforts commonly sought in larger sportfishing boats. Because Spencer has a track record in tournament circles, the new model could appeal to competitive fishermen as well as owners who want a premium offshore platform for family and friends.
Albemarle’s Edenton facility will handle mold construction and initial production, taking advantage of established tooling and quality-control processes. Working together, the two companies can utilize Albemarle’s manufacturing scale while retaining Spencer’s input on finish, layout and performance cues that define a Carolina sportfisher.
As details are finalized, prospective buyers and industry observers will be watching for announcements on specifications, available options, engine packages and delivery timelines. For now, the partnership signals a notable move in the sportfishing market: two respected builders pooling strengths to create a larger, semi-custom offshore hull designed to meet growing customer demand.
Both companies emphasized that the goal is to maintain high standards of craftsmanship while making Spencer-style performance and aesthetics more accessible through Albemarle’s production capabilities. The 53-foot project represents a next step for each builder and could broaden choices for anglers seeking a capable, well-appointed offshore boat.
