Boston Boatworks: New Custom Boats and Builds

For 27 years, Massachusetts-based Boston Boatworks built hundreds of composite boats ranging from 29 to 62 feet. The yard’s background includes high-performance, high-tech custom sailboats, expedition tenders, Coast Guard–certified passenger vessels and numerous MJM builds. That long experience in composite construction and refined systems laid the groundwork for Boston Boatworks to pursue its own line of performance-oriented luxury powerboats.

As the team asked “what if?” about creating a proprietary powerboat that blends extreme functionality with refined onboard luxury, they partnered with naval architect and longtime collaborator Doug Zurn and enlisted Winch Design, the studio responsible for the exterior and interior styling of many iconic superyachts, private aircraft and residences. The collaboration produced a new Offshore Express Cruiser series: the BB44 and the larger BB52. Both models reflect Boston Boatworks’ emphasis on practical seakeeping, comfortable accommodations and a high level of finish.

BB44

The BB44 measures 49 feet 3 inches overall with a beam of 14 feet 10 inches. Standard propulsion is twin Volvo Penta D6 engines paired with DPI Aquamatic drives. That package delivers a cruising speed of about 32 knots and a top speed near 36 knots. With a planned 10 percent fuel reserve, the BB44’s published cruising range is approximately 325 nautical miles.

Interior arrangements for the BB44 are flexible: owners can specify either a single-stateroom layout focused on a spacious owner’s suite or a two-stateroom version for additional guests. The owner’s cabin includes a queen berth, an ensuite head and generous storage. Down below the main deck the galley is arranged U-shaped to port and an L-shaped settee with a dinette sits to starboard, providing efficient food-preparation and relaxed dining.

On deck and in the salon, thoughtful social spaces complement the helm. The salon layout places a U-shaped settee and dinette abaft the helm to starboard, while a large sofa occupies the port side. Boston Boatworks offers multiple soft-goods packages so owners can select fabrics and trim to match their style. The generous cockpit features an L-shaped settee with dinette tables and direct access to a sizeable swim platform, making the BB44 well suited for day cruising, entertaining and family use.

BB52

The BB52 follows the same design philosophy on a larger scale. At 56 feet 9 inches LOA with a 16-foot 3-inch beam, the BB52 expands living and deck areas while retaining Boston Boatworks’ focus on performance and comfort. Standard propulsion is twin Volvo Penta D6 engines with DPI Aquamatic drives; owners may also specify a triple-engine arrangement of the same make for significantly higher top speed and performance flexibility.

With the twin-engine configuration the BB52 is reported to cruise at roughly 25 knots with a top speed near 30 knots and a stated range of about 332 nautical miles. Specifying triple Volvo Penta D6 engines raises the BB52’s top speed to an estimated 38 knots, offering an option for buyers prioritizing higher-speed capability.

Accommodations on the BB52 are offered in two primary plans, both designed to maximize onboard comfort and entertainment. Each plan includes two heads—one serving a forward master suite and the other serving guest or daytime living spaces. One layout places the galley lower and dedicates the salon to seating and social space, while the alternate arrangement locates the galley up in the salon and adds a second stateroom below. Both layouts emphasize large cockpit entertainment areas with a U-shaped couch, dinette tables and easy access to the swim platform, supporting alfresco dining, entertaining and family activities.

Both the BB44 and BB52 are positioned to appeal to buyers seeking an Offshore Express Cruiser that combines practical seakeeping, efficient mechanical systems and a high level of interior finish. With Boston Boatworks’ composite construction experience, Zurn’s naval architecture and Winch Design’s exterior and interior styling, these models offer a modern balance of capability, comfort and contemporary aesthetic for coastal cruising and longer passages.
