Formula Introduces Two New 387 Center Console Models at Miami Boat Show

Formula Boats of Decatur, Indiana, unveiled two new center console designs at the Discover Boating Miami International Boat Show: the 387 Center Console Fish (CCF) and the 387 Center Console Sport (CCS). The announcement marks Formula’s return to center-console production after more than 30 years. The company produced open-platform center consoles in the 1970s and early 1980s before shifting its focus to performance family cruisers and, more recently, luxury crossover dayboats.
Why Formula Is Returning to Center Consoles
At a press conference at the Miami Convention Center, Scott Porter explained the company’s rationale for re-entering the center-console market. “We’re excited about the re-entry into the center console segment,” he said. “The new models are a great extension of our dayboat lines. People may ask why we’re doing this now, but we think the time is right. We can do this because of our reputation and because of how we build boats.” Porter emphasized the versatility of the center-console layout, noting that owners will see these boats in varied settings—from offshore poker runs to relaxed days on sandbars.

Design and Construction
Both 387 models were penned by designer John Adams and are built on Formula’s proven FAS3Tech hull. This deep-V hull is designed for bluewater comfort and performance, featuring 23 degrees of deadrise aft to balance handling, ride quality, and offshore capability. The new center consoles continue Formula’s emphasis on refined construction, fit and finish, and a premium dayboat experience while adding a purpose-built layout for fishing and active recreation.
Power and Technology
Formula designed the 387 Center Console models to be powered exclusively by Mercury outboards. Available propulsion options include a pair of 600-hp V-12 Verado motors, triple 300-hp Verados, or a performance-oriented setup with triple Mercury Racing 450R outboards. All configurations are integrated with the Mercury Joystick Piloting system for simplified docking and low-speed maneuvering, offering precise control whether motoring around a marina or positioning at an offshore spot.
Features Tailored for Anglers and Dayboaters
In developing the 387 CCF, Formula consulted with fishing guides and experienced anglers from across the country to ensure the boat meets practical onboard needs. Fishing-focused features include:
- Two 40-gallon livewells for bait and catch management
- Fish boxes equipped with freezer plates to preserve the catch
- Gemlux outriggers for extended trolling options
- Dedicated bait-rigging station for efficient preparation
- Comprehensive electronics suite with depthsounder and transducer provisions
- Transom and port-side hull doors to facilitate boarding and deck access
The CCS model retains much of the same hull and systems but focuses more on sport and family-dayboat amenities, offering flexible seating and layouts that accommodate both active boating and comfortable cruising.

Comfort and Accommodations
Despite their center-console design and fishing capabilities, both 387 models offer substantial comforts for day trips and overnight stays. With a base length of 38 feet 7 inches and a 12-foot beam, the boats provide spacious fore and aft seating that converts for lounging or dining. Below deck, a cabin features 6 feet 4 inches of headroom, a full galley, a private head, and a convertible lounge—making the 387 suitable for extended outings without sacrificing the fishability or performance expected of a center-console boat.
Availability and Shows
Formula plans to launch the 387 Center Console Fish in early August, followed by the 387 Center Console Sport in September. Both models are scheduled to appear at boat shows in the fall of 2022, where prospective buyers and dealers will be able to inspect the fit, finish, and features in person.
With these new center-console models, Formula aims to blend offshore capability, modern outboard power, and the conveniences of a luxury dayboat—offering a versatile option for anglers, families, and boating enthusiasts who want a premium experience on the water.
