Bill Healey Inducted into the MTA/NJ Hall of Fame
The Marine Trades Association of New Jersey (MTA/NJ) has honored Viking Yachts cofounder Bill Healey with induction into its Hall of Fame for his lasting impact on the recreational marine industry.

A Lifetime of Leadership in Boatbuilding
Bill Healey co-founded Viking Yachts with his brother Bob in 1964 and built the company into one of the most respected names in sportfishing and luxury fishing boats. For almost five decades—serving as president and CEO for 49 years—Healey directly oversaw the engineering, design, and production processes that resulted in more than 5,000 Viking models. Under his leadership, the company developed a reputation for high-quality construction, innovation, and attention to detail that influenced standards across the industry.
Championing the Recreational Marine Industry
Beyond product development and manufacturing excellence, Healey was a prominent advocate for the recreational marine industry. He became widely known for his role in the successful effort to repeal the 1991 luxury tax on boats priced above $100,000—a tax that had threatened the domestic luxury yacht market. His advocacy helped preserve jobs, support manufacturing on the East Coast, and sustain a segment of the marine economy that supports networks of suppliers, marinas, and skilled tradespeople.
The Hall of Fame Recognition
The MTA/NJ Hall of Fame recognizes individuals or groups whose work has meaningfully promoted and protected the recreational marine sector. Inducting Bill Healey acknowledges both his achievements as a builder and his broader contributions as an industry leader and advocate. The honor reflects the respect Healey earned from peers, employees, and the wider marine community.
Family Leadership and Continued Commitment
Pat Healey, Bill’s son and the current CEO and president of Viking Yachts, accepted the Hall of Fame award on his father’s behalf. Pat emphasized the company’s deep roots in New Jersey and the enduring principles passed down through the family. “New Jersey is truly a great state, and the Healey family is proud to have founded and successfully run our boatbuilding business here for more than 60 years,” he said. Pat noted that the company has weathered both good times and difficult periods by focusing on continuous improvement: “We’ve stayed the course by building a better boat every day. That is my father’s mantra—and it still guides us today.”
Impact on Local Economy and Craftsmanship
Viking Yachts’ long-standing presence in New Jersey has had a significant local economic impact. The company’s focus on skilled craftsmanship, precision engineering, and quality control has supported a specialized workforce and a network of suppliers. This ecosystem has helped preserve technical trades and manufacturing skills that are essential to the broader recreational marine industry.
Legacy of Innovation and Advocacy
Bill Healey’s legacy combines product innovation, practical leadership, and determined advocacy. His work helped shape the modern recreational boating landscape and provided a foundation for future generations at Viking and beyond. The MTA/NJ Hall of Fame induction highlights not just a successful business career but a commitment to an industry that supports recreation, coastal communities, and maritime craftsmanship.
